With a reliance on nature and the elements sailing is all about adventure, exploration & teamwork. From a half day sail around The Eileans to a passage across a vast Ocean, sailing opens up a whole new world. I am a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Instructor (sail), a Senior Instructor Dinghy and a commercially endorsed Advanced Powerboat Instructor and offer a comprehensive range of sailing, power-boating and shore-based courses.

I also offer advice and technical expertise for RYA recognized centers.  I am The RYA Center Principle for The Arran Outdoor Education Center where you can book onto some of the many courses below.

RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Theory

This course offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills. In fact it’s for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing our on-the-water training, such as the Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses.

Course topics include: Charts and Publications, Tidal awareness, Pilotage, Anchoring, Passage planning, Safety, Buoyage, Rules of the Road, Weather Forecasts, Visual & Electronic Navigation, Engine Checks.

 RYA Day Skipper Theory

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers and equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

Course topics include: Seamanship, Coastal navigation and pilotage, Chart work, Electronic charts, Position fixing, Plotting a course to steer, Weather forecasting and meteorology, Tides, Collision regulations, Parts and equipment of a cruising boat, Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and life rafts.

RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course. This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages.This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

Course topics include: Position fixing, Course shaping and plotting, Tidal knowledge, Use of almanacs and admiralty publications, Electronic position finding equipment, Taking and interpreting forecasts, Plotting weather systems, Weather predictions using a barometer and by observation, Collision regulations, Customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad

RYA First Aid

An essential certificate for most RYA coaching qualifications.

This one-day course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages.

Topics covered include: The recovery position in a confined space, CPR, including the drowning protocol, Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure, Seasickness and dehydration, Medical assistance or advice by VHF & Helicopter rescue

RYA Day Skipper Practical

A course for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills.

I will teach you the skills which will give you the confidence and ability to skipper a sailing yacht in familiar waters by day. Topics covered in the Day Skipper course are: Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making and night cruising.

Own Boat Tuition

Own boat tuition is a perfect option for those who have newly purchased yacht or for anyone who would like to hone their skills on their own vessel. I will tailor the training to each individuals needs and experience and can cover what ever subjects the owner desires.

Practical application of navigation theory. Close quarters maneuvers, parking, coming alongside pontoons, entering and leaving a marina. Anchoring & mooring pick-ups. Man over board recovery and casualty handling. Passage planning and night passages.

Own boat tuition duration can be from half a day to a week long trip.

Yacht Delivery

I offer a professional, comprehensive and reliable yacht delivery service, where clients can be rest assured that their vessel will be delivered in a safe, timely fashion. Using my experience and my RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Instructors qualification I can deliver your yacht from and to anywhere in the world.

I regularly call on associates with the same ocean experience as myself to assist me on delivery trips. I can update clients with progress reports by means of satellite phone and on completion of a delivery a comprehensive hand-over report will detail the characteristics and condition of your vessel.
